Regular training in gung fu is a must, regardless of style. As any serious gung fu practitioner knows there are no short cuts in gung fu. In order to advance, one must train hard, train regularly and above all train correctly. For most martial artist this is all old news, something most already know and have heard time and time again. Despite the fact, not many train properly, don't have a clue on how to train or lack the patience and will power among other things needed to train in gung fu. Fact of the matter is most people love the idea of gung fu. In Gung fu knowing is not enough. Knowledge without practice is useless.
The real secret to becoming proficient in Hung Gar is correct training. The true mastery and understanding of the style is achieved through years of physical, mental and spiritual training.
Traditional Hung Gar gung fu includes many different types of training methods varying from simple exercises to more specialized methods. Depending on the teacher or the school these training methods, way of teaching and training may vary but the basic principles and fundamental concepts should be the same. Various two men drills, solo exercise and routines are undertaken to; condition ones body, mind and spirit - boost internal and external strengths, improve and increase ones power,strength, stamina,speed,awareness, accuracy and so on. The list can go on and on depending on the training methods undertaken. Although some of the methods are classified internal or external, bare in mind that there must be balance between the two.
An extremely important yet often overlooked factor to remember is to be careful and sensible, even with the simplest training drills or exercise. You do not want to end up with serious injuries or suffer from unpleasant side effects which can put you out of training for days, moths or even years. Worst of all some injuries whether internal or external may not be visible at first but may show up later in life. Take the fundamental horse stance training for example, if not practiced correctly one may end up with knee or back injuries later in life. Complaining about constant back aches or pain in the knees after going up few stairs or walking a short distance. Don't forget gung fu should promote good health not make it worst. Know exactly what you are doing, if you don't, train under the guidance of a qualified teacher.
