Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is the oldest and most comprehensive system of medical diagnosis and complete human health care which combines the use of acupuncture, acupressure, herbal medicine, massage (Tui-na) bone-setting (Dit-da), and qi gong exercises as well as nutrition and healthy living to bring the body into balance naturally.
Like Chinese Martial Arts, TCM is a big part of Chinese culture and tradition. Gung Fu and Chinese Medicine go hand in hand and being integral part of traditional gung fu, the skill, knowledge and theory of TCM has been passed down from master to disciple for thousands of years. All the great masters of Hung Gar were known for their excellent skills in Chinese Medicine as well their gung fu. One of the most famous figures in the Chinese martial arts history, Hung Gar master Wong Fei Hung was very famous for his traditional medical skills. Wong Fei Hung's clinic/school "Po Chi Lam" which he inherited from his father Wong Kei Ying had quiet a reputation as being the number one gung fu school and clinic in southern china. Wong Fei Hung passed all his skills down to his disciple Lam Sai Wing who in turn passed it down to his nephew Lam Cho. Grandmaster Lam Cho still treats patients at his legendary clinic/studio in Hong Kong. Thanks to his superb skills and knowledge in dit da, Lam Cho sigung has helped and treated thousands of people, often helping those in need and treating the poor for free.
For centuries, gung fu training and traditional Chinese medicine, specifically dit da has been practiced and thought together. Traditional Chinese Medicine has many branches and a long, colourful history. In these pages I will very briefly explain the different branches of TCM and give you a brief overview of its history, principles and theory. |
